Timeline ……… 1976 – 1977
On the evening of the last examination (annual) , came this high school junior of mine promptly to collect my books which she would use … She was really happy to receive my geography book which was neatly covered, no pencil mark, no dog ear , no folds in the edges…. Yeah……. As you all guess , it was completely untouched by my hands. Such was my passion for Geography.
Timeline ………. 1992
During my B.Ed., I had to be an intern for 21 days in any school. I joined so, where higher secondary education was introduced only in that year . I got 7 + 7 periods for commerce and book keeping and the balance 14 periods for the week were allotted to teach Geography for 6 to 8 classes. (Sure , the person who discovered sorry invented .. that commercial law and corporate accounting are inter related with geography be recommended for Nobel Prize ….)
Started learning about estuaries , deltas, valleys …Prairies, Steppes, Downs ( Grassland plains without trees ) Prairies – North America, Steppes – South America, Downs – Australia……(Real nightmare..) Always seen with Maps of various continents, magnifying glass, Atlas …looking into the maps ………( God knows where those places are in the map)…. To top my miseries….. I was always mentioned as “Geography Miss” by all the kids , teachers & management invariably……..It really bothered…..
Slowly I started to understand the logic magic of the pattern of lessons for each continent, which ultimately triggered my interest to learn more about the landscape patterns (Political features, Physical features, Flora & fauna(Vegetation), Industry , Transport & Trade ).
Timeline ………..2010
It was a clear sunny day and our flight was from the West coast to the East coast of North American continent. 30,000 ft from the ground……..( San francisco to New York)
The landscape was clearly seen from the air craft which included the yellow, green and red signal lights ….. (trust me…..)
While gazing through the window, I noticed the landscape beneath………. It was breathtaking …… Starting from the San francisco bay, brick colored neveda desert (Grand canyon?!) , a river for miles and miles , vegetation around the river, great lakes and finally comes the Hudson Bay (New York)…..(just before the landing the Brooklyn bridge )exactly what I had read and noticed in the physical features map of North America…..Amazing……
Gosh….I missed to take a pic of the Grand Canyon! Better luck next time ……….(Selfie wish, Huh?)
